Hi, I’m Marie-Marthe - French-born and now based in the UK, where I’ve lived for the past 15 years. My journey has taken me across countries and careers: I trained as an accountant, worked as a relocation consultant helping employees from global companies like Adidas and SAP move abroad and even ran my own jewellery design business. I also spent three years living in Singapore, an experience that deepened my understanding of cultural transitions and the challenges of adapting to change.

Alongside these professional experiences, I’ve embraced the joys and challenges of family life as a woman and a mum of two young boys. Moving countries, balancing work with motherhood and navigating major life transitions have all shaped my perspective on resilience, adaptability and wellbeing.

More than ten years ago, I was first introduced to Sophrology and its gentle & powerful approach immediately resonated with me. I later trained at the Sophrology Academy in Kent, gaining an ISF (International Sophrology Federation) accredited qualification. As a member, I follow their Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, ensuring that my practice is professional, safe and client-focused.

Today, I’m passionate about sharing Sophrology as a practical, accessible method that supports people through stress, life transitions and personal growth - just as it has supported me.

I’d love to hear about your needs and how Sophrology might support you. Why not book a free 15-minute online call and let’s have a chat?

Sophrology is about connection - and that starts with getting to know the person who will guide you.

So what exactly is Sophrology and how can it support you?

What is Sophrology?

Sophrology is a method that helps you regain a sense of agency in your life. By reconnecting mind and body, it offers practical tools to manage stress and anxiety 🙇‍♂️, improve sleep 😴, boost resilience and support overall health and well-being.

The word comes from the Greek roots:

Sôs “harmony” + phren “mind” + logos “study” → the study of consciousness in harmony.

Created in the 1960s by neuropsychiatrist Dr Alfonso Caycedo, Sophrology combines breathing techniques, gentle body movements,\ and guided visualisations using the imagination. It draws inspiration from ancient practices such as yoga, meditation, mindfulness, Buddhism and Japanese Zen, while remaining a modern and adaptable method.

In its 60 years of practice, Sophrology has been widely prescribed by GPs 🧑‍⚕️ in France and is increasingly recognised in the UK. People use it for many reasons: day-to-day well-being, stress and anxiety, sleep difficulties, chronic conditions, sports performance🏃‍♂️ or to prepare for important events such as childbirth, public speaking or big life transitions.

During a session, my voice will gently guide you into a relaxed state, where you’ll be introduced to simple exercises tailored to your needs. You’ll then be able to practise these tools on your own - anytime, anywhere.

At its heart, Sophrology is about helping you reconnect with yourself, find balance and reclaim your sense of agency

Because Sophrology is still fairly new in the UK, there are sometimes misconceptions about what it involves. Let’s clear those up.

Sophrology is a simple yet powerful method to bring calm, balance, and clarity into your daily life.

What Sophrology is not...

  • Yoga - While some gentle movements in Sophrology are inspired by yoga, they are much simpler and never strenuous. There is no “right” or “wrong” way – only your way. You won’t need any special clothes or equipment, just come as you are.

  • Meditation & Mindfulness - Sophrology shares some similarities with these practices, such as pausing and observing without judgement. The difference is that Sophrology also includes gentle movements and breathing techniques, which can make it easier for busy minds to settle and engage with the practice.

  • Hypnosis - In Sophrology, the relaxed state you reach is lighter than hypnosis. You remain fully conscious and in control at all times, free to move or use the breathing techniques I guide you through. With practice, you’ll be able to reach this state by yourself, anytime, anywhere.

Sophrology is not a form of religion or esoteric practice. It’s a structured, practical method grounded in science and widely recognised in Europe.

Please note that Sophrology is not a substitute for a medical or psychological diagnosis or treatment given by a qualified medical practitioner. Sophrology is not suitable for anyone experiencing severe trauma or serious mental health difficulties.

Please ask your GP in case of any doubt.

Sophrology is often compared to other practices. Here’s how it differs, while keeping its own unique identity.
